Tous Les Jours
By Cynthia Garcia.
This past week I ventured into one of my favorite asian grocery stores, H Mart. I was in the look for my favorite black tea latte instant packs by Emperor Love and a classic Sriracha bottle by Huy Fong (if you know, you know).
Upon entering the store, I had always noticed a small bakery off to the side. I always felt intimidated to venture into the selections of sweet and savory pastries they carried. There was always a crowd of people and felt anxious about grabbing a tray and walking through the thin aisles not knowing what to grab.
But this Tuesday was different. Since it was an early weekday, the thin aisles were empty and shelves were stocked. So I decided it’s now or never, I grabbed my tray and began to venture into what would become one of my favorite bakeries to this day.
Tous Les Jours is a South Korean bakery franchise that brings together a variety of flavors to create French-Asian inspired pastries and custom cakes. With over 1,650 locations worldwide, they offer a variety of delicious baked goods to satisfy your tastebuds. If you’re looking for a quick breakfast or special treat to celebrate an occasion, this is the place to go. They offer well known items, like chocolate croissants, to more interesting options, like kimchi croquettes.
Thankfully all the pastries were organized by name cards that contained information on the ingredients. This helped me narrow my selection. After scanning through their selections of cream filled breads, donuts, croissants, thick-cut sliced bread loaves, and tarts. I finally made up my mind.
I decided to go for:
- Honey Cheese Mochi Pancake-$4.50
- Kimchi Croquette-$3.00
- Potato Cheese Bread-$4.50
- Mocha Cream Bread-$4.50
Honey Cheese Mochi Pancake- 7.5/10
Now these were interesting, I wasn’t’t sure what to expect but it absolutely blew me away. The texture is a bit chewy due to the mochi. They blend together the sweetness of honey with the sharpness of parmesan, and fill it with a tarty yet semi-sweet cream cheese. The textures and flavors blend wonderfully together to create a sweet and cheesy treat.
Kimchi Croquette- 9/10
To be quite honest I was a little scared to try these. I love kimchi, but I had no idea what to expect with a kimchi croquette.
Within the first bite I knew this treat was about to become a repeat purchase.
The dough was flaky and crispy. There was a thin layer of kimchi in the middle adding a nice tangy kick to the whole snack. It makes a great lunch or snack option. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves kimchi.
Potato Cheese Bread- 6/10
To be honest, I found these to be quite unremarkable.
The bread was has a top layer of potato that’s been roasted. The taste is cheesy, semi- sweet, and potaot. As someone who loves all of the things, I expected more. The flavors were lacking and I found it to be quiet bland.
I’m glad I tried it, but I definitely won’t be reaching for these again. With many other options offered, I definitely be picking something else.
Mocha Cream Bread- 10/10
If you’re a coffee lover, then you will go absolutely crazy for this mocha cream bread.
The bread is very light and pillowy. The whip cream between the slices is fluffy and not overpowerlingly sweet. There are raisins mixed into the dough and I know, raisins? But surprisingly it works really well with coffee flavor. It has become one of my one favorite sweet breads around.
Don’t be afraid to try this, you won’t regret it.
